As part of our ongoing sustainability initiatives across the destinations we sail, we invited founder of the Indonesian Manta Project, Sarah Lewis, aboard Aqua Blu to explore collaborations through which we can expand our efforts to conserve aquatic biodiversity in East Indonesia. Read on to find out more about her time on board.

In January 2024, I had the pleasure of embarking on Aqua Expeditions’ 7-day voyage through the stunning Raja Ampat islands aboard Aqua Blu. Before delving into this journey, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Sarah Lewis, a marine biologist, conservationist, and the founder of both the Indonesian Manta Project and the non-profit organization Thrive Conservation. My commitment to Indonesia's marine biodiversity began in 2010, initially focusing on the protection of majestic manta rays and expanding to address broader conservation issues while nurturing young Indonesian conservationists.

In 2019, we initiated a partnership between Aqua Expeditions and the Indonesian Manta Project, aiming to enhance support for manta ray conservation efforts in the region. Now, in 2024, we're thrilled to expand this collaboration further to make an even greater impact.

To foster this partnership, Aqua Expeditions graciously invited me aboard Aqua Blu to experience their Raja Ampat voyage firsthand and meet their dedicated crew. Our goal? To develop tailored initiatives that strengthen Aqua Expeditions’ support for the Indonesian Manta Project and advance our shared mission of marine conservation.

During my time aboard Aqua Blu, I witnessed Aqua Expeditions’ genuine commitment to environmental stewardship. From sustainable practices to a sincere passion for conservation, it was evident that we shared a common vision for a healthier planet. The warmth and dedication of the Indonesian crew, who are deeply knowledgeable about their natural environment, added an extra layer of authenticity to the experience. Aqua Blu's unique itinerary showcases some of Raja Ampat's most special sights — both above and below the water — guided by their talented crew who passionately share their wealth of information with guests.

Through insightful discussions, we explored various avenues to deepen Aqua Expeditions’ engagement with the Indonesian Manta Project. From fundraising initiatives to onboard educational materials, we aim to raise awareness and funds for manta ray conservation while enriching guests' experiences with meaningful insights into Indonesia's marine biodiversity and the opportunity to play a role in protecting it.

Our partnership transcends mere financial support; it's about leveraging our collective expertise and resources to effect tangible change. By merging Aqua Expeditions’ luxury travel experiences with our conservation efforts, we have the opportunity to inspire travelers and make a lasting difference in the protection of Indonesia's marine ecosystems.

As I reflect on my journey aboard Aqua Blu, I'm filled with optimism for the future. Collaboration between nonprofit and for-profit organizations enhances our ability to make meaningful contributions to the global movement towards a healthier and protected environment.

Stay tuned as we unveil the exciting initiatives born from our collaboration and embark on a journey to protect and preserve the wonders of Indonesia's oceans.
